The Egyptian president, Mohamed Morsi, has appointed a member of the hardline Islamist group Gamaa Islamiya to the governorship of Luxor – a tourist city in which militants associated with the group killed 58 tourists in 1997.
The symbolism of the appointment has enraged Egypt's sidelined non-Islamist opposition, who see it as further evidence that Morsi is unconcerned about the country's increasing polarisation.
Tourism is the lifeblood of Luxor, home to some of Egypt's most dramatic ancient temples and pharaonic tombs, including that of Tutankhamun. The city has been hit hard by the downtown in foreign visitors during the past two years of turmoil.
Members of the tourism industry are worried about the impact of the new governor both because of his ties to the former militant Gamaa Islamiya and because of the prospect of a hardline Islamist running the city and surrounding province.
"Is it unimaginable that those who plotted, participated or played any role in the massacre of Luxor, become the rulers even if they renounced and repented it," said Tharwat Agamy, the head of Luxor's tourism chamber. He said that he along with others in the tourism industry, politicians and activists, they were considering chaining the doors of the governor's building and sending him back to the airport.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I was reading an article about the expectation that tourists would be safe in Egypt from now on. This decision is not affirming that promised free pass for anyone who might remotely be considered an infidel, which would be almost all foreign tourists to Egypt. Earlier, readings were about the worries that fundamentalists would pick out and find ancient beliefs, classify them as an infidel religion, and deface relief sculptures, paintings, statues, and even museum relics over beliefs that would satisfy the demands of zealotry to principles of Islam. Due to past acts of terror against foreign people by fanatics, this appointment smacks of death to infidels. It just does.
He’s on an unrelenting mission to establish the murderous, subhuman islamic caliphate, all over the world. And 52% of America elected this POS TWICE! We get what we (collectively) deserve.
I think we somehow have contracted a national case of "Stockholm Syndrome".
The more we suffer from muslim terrorism and savagery, the more our leaders kiss their butts and try to appease them.
Imagine America electing a pro-Japanese president after Pearl Harbor.
Yet that is the analog of what America has done by electing Obama after muslims killed thousands in the 9/11/2001 sneak attack.
Same could be said for electing a nazi-lover to the WH, and look at all the deaths after 9-11, to Americans and worldwide. People who can’t see this obvious fact are truly afflicted with SS, as you said. They need to be ID’s, rounded-up, and stood against a stone wall and shot, as traitors. CW2 can’t come soon enough to save us. We are now so infiltrated and compromised, I’m not sure America can even be saved, anymore.
