I want to say that Mencken was the Steyn of his time yet for all my delight in reading Steyn, he has far to go to be Mencken.

Are you kidding? H.L. Mencken, the atheist, the creator of stereotypes about Southerners and Fundamentalists that liberals use to this day? This is a hero of conservative journalism?

The only reason I can figure that any "conservative" has any use for Mencken (much less the totem-like status he now holds) is because the magazine he founded ended its days as a neo-Nazi publication under the infamous Willis Carto (who lionized Mencken, btw).

It’s true, I have not studied him and have only read
some of his quotes. He is verbose but then educated
people talked like that at the time.

Will have to read up. Still it’s hard to beat...

“On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts’ desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron” - (H. L. Mencken, 1920)

Carto is still alive. He’s in his mid 80s.
