GOP senators pass abortion measure requiring ultrasounds

Madison — In a raucous clash on the state Senate floor Wednesday that recalled the bitter divides of 2011, Republicans abruptly cut off debate and forced a vote mandating that women seeking abortions get ultrasounds.

The morning's brief floor session included sharp exchanges and one senator claiming abortions "became the thing to do" in the 1960s.

Democrats protested the bill's merits and the process by which it was passed, saying Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald of Juneau and his fellow Republicans were trampling on democracy by ending debate after about 20 minutes.

"My first advice to the majority leader is that he seeks psychological help," Sen. Bob Jauch (D-Poplar) said at a news conference after the vote.

Fitzgerald laughed off that comment and compared Democrats' reaction on Wednesday to their decision in 2011 to leave the state for three weeks in a failed attempt to stop legislation all but ending collective bargaining for most public workers.

"Here we go again," Fitzgerald said. He described Democrats' approach as, "We don't like what's happening from a public policy perspective, so we're not going to play by the rules."

The abortion measure passed 17-15, with all Republicans for it and all Democrats against it. Sen. Luther Olsen (R-Ripon) was absent.

It now goes to the Assembly, which is expected to take it up Thursday. GOP Gov. Scott Walker has said he would sign the bill.

Great news from the Wisconsin state Senate. Sonya's law passed the senate and now goes to the state assembly for review there and then on to Gov. Walker to become law.

It seems that Demos are against ANY effort to safe a life...

Let that be broadcast, (using their tactics) Demos are “baby killers”.

Libs hate the ultrasounds because upon seeing them, many women decide not to abort. Why? Because they can see that it’s a BABY, with a HEARTBEAT, and not an “clump of cells.”

Ever notice that when a liberal law gets passed, the Senate passed it.
When a conservative law gets passed, the GOP senators passed it.

Quite true... However, it was a party-line vote. The GOP senators passed it and Dem senators all voted against it. There was no bipartisanship on either side of this one.

Not having an ultrasound done should be the rare exception .. every clinic ALREADY does an ultrasound so that they can upcharge based on gestational age... of course they don’t allow the customer to see the images... That’s the key ... this is not a new requirement or a burden on any clinic... you couldn’t possibly do an abortion without knowing if there was a problem with the womans uterus or if the pregnancy was ectopic for instance (in which case they would do a suction abortion , find no uterine contents and just assume the pregnancy test was a false positive...leaving the woman in peril)...

Yet they’re all for ANY restriction they can muster on guns. When it comes to the actual killing of a human life, nothing.

"Bitter divides" occur when Republicans don't go along with every jot and tittle of whatever the most extreme left-wing Democrats want.

Great news, but just more window dressing.. Call me when the mothers are required to identify the fathers...

Give the responsibility for the cost of the procedure, or the raising the child to the two people that created the problem.. Why are we, the taxpayer, the workers, the folks that make the wheels turn, automatically responsible for their mistake...

Do you really think that showing these sex machines the blurry picture of an infant going to give them a conscience? Give me a break..

Happens more often than you might think ,, and it will have a tremendous toll on the ultrasound tech ,, they’ll be quitting before they start... denying the lies is what I’m shooting for ..

Vladimir Lenin once said…”the lie is sacred and deception will be our principal weapon.”

Couldn’t agree more! They’ll be texting their baby daddys (plural) setting up the next booty call while the hospital sends you & I the bill for the ultrasound. This is just another waste of our tax dollars. Enough! I’ve had it, can I just pay for my own kids?

The ultrasound is ALREADY done , it is NOT an additional expense ,, except to the clinic when the woman cancels the abortion.

Note to reporters, it’s not a racous clash unless
someone gets a black eye or is thrashed with a cane.
An event which happens far too little in our political
system today.

You really think forcing a woman to view an ultrasound will stop abortion? Are you gonna force her eyelids open too? How many people are you gonna hire with tax dollars to ensure compliance? Government can’t legislate or mandate morality. If you can do all of this and not take a dime out of my check to pay for it, go for it. I’m tapped out.

You're being VERY negative for no good reason ... I think we have an excellent opportunity to enforce REALITY on these businesses ... with reality being ACTUAL TRUE INFORMED CONSENT (already a legal requirement,,, they just are exempted by local rules), compliance with OUTPATIENT SURGERY CENTER standards (already a legal requirement ,, they just are exempted by local rules) and yes BRINGING REALITY HOME to the "mother" via mandatory ULTRASOUND VIEWING AND A FINAL SIGNOFF...

You're worried about expenses related to compliance verification ... As long as we get the laws on the books ... ( THEY"RE ALREADY ON THE BOOKS!!! WE JUST NEED TO GET THE EXEMPTIONS REMOVED THAT ALLOW THEM TO OPERATE OUT OF COMPLIANCE) ... The bottom line is that with cheap spycam technology we can provide the enforcement ourselves... Isn't that what has been happening repeatedly in the news over the last year or so...

Just how much extra do you think it'll take out of your pocket anyway ... for some lazy dept. of health employee to get off their ass and visit a clinic... they're salaried and they , like most gov't workers , barely work at anything more than deciding where to go to lunch... they CAN work it into their schedule.

**** As to your asinine "Government can't legislate morality" comment ****

That's exactly what all laws do... The stop sign on the corner legislates that you don't blast through an intersection because it would create a danger to others... The laws against fraud legislate morality ... What about rape laws ,, Are you saying that rape is OK and shouldn't be illegal if the woman isn't physically harmed... we can't legislate morality after all according to you...
