I don’t view this guy as treasonous and traitorous any more than I might view any run of the mill far left liberal...:)

I don’t even bother using the terms anymore. They have absolutely zero meaning, because they are unenforced, even when blatant actions should have demanded it.

When Jane Fonda went to North Vietnam, that killed the concept for good. Actually, when Alger Hiss and his buddies got away with all they did without barely a slap on the wrist, that is when TREASON and TRAITOR died.

Our founders were right, though, to make that bar a very high one.

You are absolutely correct that our society and our nation have lost sight of those meanings, and the examples given demonstrate this clearly enough... I guess I just expect better from Freepers (and John Bolton).
Personally, I’d prefer a government that keeps no secrets at all to one that violates its own charter by spying on its citizens without cause. The terrorists were never as great a threat as the politicians are.

Alger HIss went to prison for 3 years. Now you and I might argue that he should have died there, but somebody else thought it useful to let him out ~ and no doubt he was followed around and photos were made, and J.Edgar Hoover built files for use down the road by analysts with an interest in such folks.

I still think the Detroit problem was more costly than HIss. There you had the Young family directly on the payroll of the USSR's politboro ~ and Andrew and his friends were running that city in the ground. The personnel director at the post office was in a curious position as well. A Young relate (Andy's brother I believe) he knew all the used up defectors sent there. Detroit was where the gub'mnt employed them! A number of them were engineers so they fit right in the postal lab maintained at that site.

When 'mail covers' were run, the letters were routed to Detroit ~ Paul Carlin can tell you about that practice ~ so whoever we were interested in was immediately revealed, through Young and double agent defectors, to the KGB.

Interestingly enough one of the revelations made during this news cycle was that all letter mail which requires sortation is actually photographed ~ and I can imagine all sorts of reasons why that would be done ~ stopping anthrax and other chemical attacks from spreading is a good one ~ but those 'covers' create metadata of use to...... who?

The lab is in the DC area these days, but do we still send defectors over there to work? The same old same old could be underway in that quarter and yet no one cares but me?
