It’s a Marlin 45-70, and it’s kicks like a mule. But, I have no more worries about our neighborhood being invaded by buffalo or elephants.

Many buffalo, bison actually, were taken with .45-70.. but it's Not Enough Gun for elephants, or real buffalo for that matter. The later would just get and angry and give you The Horn. Elephant might not notice. but if the did, they'd come stomp you to death. Either might die of blood loss or infection, but it wouldn't be quick nor in time to save you from them.
But it did kick like a mule, it's pretty light.
