I thought men in the Army and US Navy couldn’t wear beards either, unless they had a problem with hair folliculitis from shaving (a problem with some people with very curly hair) or if they got an exception for religious reasons (e.g. Muslims or Sikhs)... It has to do with being able to wear a gas mask...

Of course, I’m old enough to remember Christina Jorgenson: so it’s not a new problem.
