D-Day Lest We Forget
U.S. Army.MIL ^ | June 6, 1944 | U.S. Army

Posted on 06/06/2013 4:33:15 AM PDT by DJ Taylor

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon a great crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers in arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened, he will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man to man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our home fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!

Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

-- Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower

I was surprised and disappointed that there was no mention in my morning newspaper or anywhere on the internet that today is June 6 D-Day Anniversary, so here's a reminder.

My father was there and I used to ask him if he was afraid.

He said sure... but more than anything, he wanted off the boat and onto the beach. He was deathly sea-sick and didn’t care about anything but getting off the boat.

I always remember that.

as i am an early riser...i always say a prayer and thanks for those who fought and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. i always try to image minute for minute, for at least a hour, what people went through all those years ago for all of us. even now i think, about an hour ago in 1944, Omaha beach was turning a corner as some of the german defences began to fold under the pressure.. i cannot image the levels of heroism it took to do that..i really dont think there is a word in the english language to describe it.

I think we can assume that Google has no reference to it; the people who staff it can be best described as irreligious and un-American.

“...Google has no reference to it; the people who staff it can be best described as irreligious and un-American.”

There does seem to be an anti-American History movement with it’s embellishments towards the more recent past while diminishing the prominence of what the record shows.

It’s hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that someone like Bradley Manning would be a hero to so many young Americans.

Today is also the anniversary of the Battle of Belleau Wood, in 1918, in which the US Marines brought a halt to the final German offensive of WWI. In addition, it’s the anniversary of Proposition 13 (1978) and the birthday of George Deukmejian (1933), California’s last conservative governor.
