Program bug?
Nope. When your browser sees a < or a > in your reply, it thinks that's the beginning of an HTML tag and treats it accordingly.
To be able to use < and > we have to fool the browser by using character entities instead.
All entities start with an ampersand and end with a semicolon. In between are letters or numbers identifying which entity we want to use. In the case of < the letters are lt for less than. And for > the letters are gt for greater than. The entity for < is < and for > it is >
