A hundred yards downriver from this concrete waterfall, people stop at the little park to record the scene on their smart phones or digital cameras. It is an image made for a postcard -- a remarkable marriage of nature and technology. And a centerpiece of the Tennessee Valley Authority.
Created in 1933 by President Roosevelt, the TVA brought electricity to Appalachia, with the goal that wiring up Tennessee, parts of North Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi would help bring prosperity to an impoverished region.
But in his new budget, President Obama ordered a strategic review of the TVA with an eye toward selling it to private interests.
Though the TVA operates solely with income from ratepayers, it has a debt of some $25 billion. While that debt is not backed by the federal government, it is included in the overall federal debt numbers.
By selling the TVA, Obama can give the appearance of immediately erasing $25 billion in red ink from the books.

Key words to note here: "in his new budget." How many votes have his previous budget proposals gotten in Congress? The same number of votes this budget is going to get. Nada. TVA is not going to be sold out just yet. Not without Congress' say-so.
If it was a straightforward sale I think there would be a lot of agreement with it. But this is Obastard, nothing is ever straightforward with this regime. After being burned a few times by deals "conservatives should like," most are wary, and that's what you are seeing on this thread.
Remember the story Reagan liked to tell about the little optimist boy digging through a pile of manure looking for a pony? It's like that in reverse. The pony looks good, but the cynic in me knows there's manure in it somewhere.
My idea exactly, but I wasn’t clear about their market focus from his post. I don’t follow the TVA and suspected they’d outgrown their original mandate that I learned in HS history class.
the debt should be owed by the recipients of the energy. these people have been paying little to nothing on energy bills for 3 generations. i would gladly trade my $300 per month bills in calif for theirs
