My thoughts exactly. If police will not defend the exercise of the First Amendment against violence, it's time to resort to the Second Amendment. There are logical ways to arrange that so that the intolerant thugs are not intentionally provoked by the armed parties but so that it is lawful to use deadly force in the defense on another person's life.

the problem with mob violence is that you typically can’t see your aggressor. if you’re surrounded by 100 people, how do you pick out which one hit you in the back of the head with a bottle?
it’s not limited to muslims in MI either. there were a number of assaults at a pro-union rally recently where a number of anti-union counter protestors (including one of my friends) were assaulted, had personal property stolen or destroyed, and were threatened with grevious bodily harm (my friend had his phone stolen, and his wife received a number of death threats). cops would not allow charges to be filed as there was “no proof” of which individual committed the crime (never mind the pics and videos and numerous eye witness accounts).
