Stepping back and thinking about it, you can make an argument both ways.
Letting the narrative play out runs the risk of having it shut down. The Media is mad, but they will let it slide eventually.
Having Rush and others make a big deal about it runs the risk of having it become partisan, and therefore forcing the media to shut it down.
Either way, it appears that we assume that the Republicans can not control the narrative. Which is why I fear not much will happen.

We’re gonna be accused of being partisan and of “jumping up and down” and “screaming” regardless of what we do - so we might as well jump up and down and scream and keep it in the news. There will NEVER EVER EVER NEVER be a polite circumspect enough approach on our part to avoid the partisan criticism. This is where Krauthammer is blitheringly naive.
