When, how & why it [Negro} became considered a slur is something I can never grasp.

If yours was a serious question, and at the risk of being obvious, here's my serious answer. The word Negro, simply meaning black in Spanish and innocuous itself, finally [it took a while] came into disfavor because long ago a corruption of it resulted in the demeaning word "Nigger."

Does the United Negro College Fund know this?

Should we sue them for racism?

True enough. Negro comes from Negroid, the proper terminology for the race (like Caucasoid or Mongoloid).

Negro and homosexual are proper terms and should be preferred over the PC term du jour.

I get that, but it still seems silly to me.

And now you get stupidities like broadcasters referring to black people from Africa as “african-americans”.
