WASHINGTON (AP) The Internal Revenue Service is apologizing for inappropriately flagging conservative political groups for additional reviews during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status. Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS unit that oversees tax-exempt groups, said organizations that included the words "tea party" or "patriot" in their applications for tax-exempt status were singled out for additional reviews. Lerner said the practice, initiated by low-level workers in Cincinnati, was wrong and she apologized while speaking at a conference in Washington. Many conservative groups complained during the election that they were being harassed by the IRS. They said the agency asked them an inordinate number of questions to justify their tax-exempt status. Certain tax-exempt charitable groups can conduct political activities but it cannot be their primary activity.

Back in May 2009, Professor Glenn Reynolds, better known to his followers as Instapundit, penned an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal in which he discussed some odd rhetoric from President Obama. Obama had been refused an honorary doctorate by Arizona State University, and Obama remarked, President [Michael] Crowe and the Board of Regents will soon learn all about being audited by the IRS. Reynolds pointed out:
Just a joke about the power of the presidency. Made by Jay Leno it might have been funny. But as told by Mr. Obama, the actual president of the United States, it’s hard to see the humor. Surely he’s aware that other presidents, most notably Richard Nixon, have abused the power of the Internal Revenue Service to harass their political opponents. But that abuse generated a powerful backlash and with good reason. Should the IRS come to be seen as just a bunch of enforcers for whoever is in political power, the result would be an enormous loss of legitimacy for the tax system.
As it turns out, the IRS under President Obama routinely gave special scrutiny for groups with the terms tea party or patriots in their titles. His little joke doesnt read much like a joke anymore.

This administration is unlike any other and I am 63 years old this administration has to be run by some shadow group of a frightening kind

She’s not apologizing for the IRS, but for the “low level workers”.
Our Founding Fathers would have never had an income tax or IRS to begin with.

Once again, those in the government ruling class, are evil to the core.
Again, those in government have no honor and refuse to take responsibility for their actions, actions which if occurred in private sector America, those involved would be fired, and prosecuted.
They all do the deeds with the idea they’ll simply apologize after the fact. It’s how they work.
Then they confuse any matter with all sorts of unrelated information to flood the real purpose and happening....
It does work...as we have seen with so many moves they make....then all the politicians use it to gain brownie points...and no consequences ever are forthcoming.
Unfortunately you are right...and we do tend to follow the tail that is wagged don’t we? None of this should surprise us, we’re watching the equivalent to any “gang” of mobsters dressed in suites and role playing to look “shaven and clean”.
Absolutely...These are the actions of mobsters, Nazis and those who desire to control everything and everyone, using fines, audits, taxes and threats of investigation as their weapons.
Scary cheet.
Take everything away from everyone involved, leave them destitute. Matter of fact, take everything away from everyone who works for the IRS. Make those who aren’t involved prove it. Goose-Gander, that’s the way they treat taxpayers.
LOL!
“Of course there will be no repercussions and this will be a blip on FOX, only.”
Megan Kelly had an excellent discussion with the lawyer who forced the IRS thugs back into their cages on this and their small apology.
It will not be carried by ABCNNBCBS.
Here's the problem: the IRS has the power to effectively ruin people by starting a tax audit, even for specious reasons. Given that the Tea Party was specifically targeted for an IRS audit, that tells me no less than the President himself may have approved of this.
Just why, right now, is the IRS coming forward with this mea culpa? Is it possible that the heat over Benghazi is getting to the Obama administration and this is there way to throw a bone to conservatives and Republicans? As in, “We did some bad things. We didn't play fair, now would you back off the whole Benghazi thing and we'll try to play nice with you now.”
Is this possible or is this too wild? Why would they voluntarily just now come forward with this info and apology?
Exactly. See my post at #54.
In all seriousness you are correct. Our Founding Fathers had a unbridled passion for Liberty. They knew that government was an inherently evil institution.
Our Founders would have gathered up the State Militias when the first stirrings of the evil Progressives were pushing the 17th Amendment.
Our Founders would have never allowed the Progressive movement to gain power.
In private business, someone caught in such a flagrant policy violation would be fired or demoted.
I want to know what happened to these low-level employees.
No, I am not holding my breath.
Lemme guess? No one questioned Organizing For America’s questionable activities, right?
