Any physical device can be scanned with a laser into a software application like CAD. The 3D image in the CAD application can then be printed (fabricated) without the need to download the 3D image file.

Objects can also be scanned with MRI technology to create the 3D image file for printing.

This technology has been around for 30 years and only recently has it developed to the point where the technology is viable. It is going to be an important manufacturing technology for the future. Instead of shipping parts we will be transferring files and products will be fabricated locally. Even the left wingers will see that using 3D printers for manufacturing reduces the products carbon footprint since there will be no required shipping.

Sci-fi story had that as the basis for interstellar travel. "Way stations" printed/cloned new bodies. Only the "mind" and "3d Code" for the body was transmitted as coded radio transmissions. After transmission, the "left behind" body was dissolved and recycled.
