‘No such thing as ethical oil,’ Al Gore tells Toronto audience

Declaring that “American democracy has been hacked,” former U.S. vice-president Al Gore told a Toronto audience that his countrymen needed to wake up to the special interests that have a grip on the levers of power in the U.S. Congress and are able to block legislation on a range of policy issues including his signature cause, global climate change.
Mr. Gore added that he felt action on climate change was possible, indeed inevitable, once it was viewed by enough people as a matter of personal values. “When these kind of issues settle into a choice between right and wrong, then the moral clarity that eventually develops makes it possible to move quickly.”
In a public interview with The Globe and Mail’s editor-in-chief, John Stackhouse, Mr. Gore also spoke of his wish that U.S. president Barack Obama would cancel the Keystone XL pipeline intended to transport heavy crude from the Alberta oil sands to U.S. refineries. In part because oil-sands crude requires more energy to extract than conventional sources, and so produces more greenhouse gases per barrel, he suggested that the full social and environmental cost of developing the oil sands made it a more expensive proposition than a faster move by the U.S. to renewable sources.

A drive to privatize some government lands during the mid-1990s succeeded in 1997 with the sale of the reserve to Occidental Petroleum, the highest bidder. Occidental took over operations in early 1998 and has been the principal operator since then; in 2008 they had a 78% interest in the oil field. Current reserves are claimed to be either 106,554,000 barrels of oil (according to the California Department of Conservation)[1] or 484,000,000 barrels of oil equivalent, according to Occidental Petroleum.[3]

When the elder Gore left the Senate in 1970, Hammer hired him for $500,000 a year. Personally and professionally the vice president has profited from Occidental largess. To this day he still draws $20,000 a year from a land deal in Tennessee brokered between his father and Hammer.
How does a FALL in the average temperatures reflect a negative in the sustainability of life?
At lower temperatures MORE CO2 is absorbed and held in the surface waters of the world, supplying more of the plant food that aquatic plants need to thrive and produce oxygen, which in turn makes a more hospitable environment for the sea life. Oxygen dissolved in water soon reaches its saturation point, and escapes to the atmosphere at large, where it is available to the majority of the rest of living things on the planet. I am not sure how it would be calculated, but in all likelihood, the surface of the seas probably give up MORE oxygen to the atmosphere than all the rain forests and savannahs put together.
If only because so much of the surface of the planet is covered with water of varying degrees of salinity.
Al Gore is entirely devoid of any kind of critical thinking.

When can we expect Al to to return the Armand Hammer oil money that he’s lived on his entire life?
In 2006, the Gore TN mansion devoured 221,000 kWh of electricity (20 X the national average) and nothing has changed since then. Way to practice what you preach, Al.
