I don't believe there was any try to ptrotect, it was an outright reminder that the regime is controlled by democrips and these witnesses/whistleblowers are at the mercy of democrips in power. That was reinforced by the further assertion that these same regime members can see to it that Hicks gets a 'posting of his choice' ... the implication being that if he cooperates with the criminal enterprise democrips he will be rewarded, and if he does not help them and ignore truth he will 'not be rewarded'.
