Dem Candidate Listed Twice on Ballot in South Carolina Special Election

Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, the Democratic nominee for the South Carolina First Congressional District special election, is listed twice on today's ballot. Colbert-Busch is also the nominee of the Working Families party.

"She's been nominated by both parties. There's no prohibition in South Carolina against that," explains Chris Whitmire, director of public information and training at the South Carolina State Election Commission.

All votes for Colbert-Busch "go to Colbert-Busch," regardless of whether the voter selects the Democratic Busch or the Working Families Busch. But tonight, when the votes are counted, Busch's votes will be separated by party, even if it's the cumulative vote count that matters.

Colbert-Busch is running against Eugene Platt of the Green party and Mark Sanford of the Republican party.

Here's another way to vote for a liberal without voting for a Democrat.

WORKING Families = UNION Families . . .

. . . as if those of us who do not belong to d@mn unions do not work. At least that's the way the label works in New York.

It seems reasonable that she’s listed twice since so many democrats vote twice. Maybe they should list a dead candidate so that dead democrats could vote for one of their own.

I think we need to watch this election closely. It will be a good indicator of what we will be dealing with in 2014. New ways to commit more fraud, with Holders help.

The Working Families Party is a communist party isn’t it? Hillary ran on it.

Just as they have for at least a century in North C'lina and Joisey.

(BTW: Exceptionally nice suit!)

My understanding is that it happens in New York (state) all the time. A candidate might be on the Republican Party and Conservative Party lines simultaneously.

Sanford will win by at least TEN points. Exit polls will show that LIVs ( a.k.a. Democrats) were psychologically incapable of voting for a Busch.

Low-information voters. Took me awhile to figure it out. You youngsters are so hip and groovy.

This happens a lot on the New York ballots where candidates can be listed for each party endorsement (i.e, Conservative, Republican, Right to Life, Democrat, Working Families, etc.)

I’m assuming that if a person votes for Colbert-Busch twice (i.e., an “overvote” - once on both lines of the ballot) that it will NOT count as two votes for her. I WOULD NOT bet the farm on her not getting credit for two votes in the final tally.

I’m assuming that if a person votes for Colbert-Busch twice (on the same ballot) that the ballot will not be treated as a “spoilt” vote and thus will not be considered illegal and will thus count as at least a single vote for Colbert-Busch. I MIGHT be willing to bet the farm on this ballot being counted and not thrown out since the voter’s intent seems clear.

Right, and it’s also used to get a new or third party more clout, regarding election laws, etc.

This is pretty common. In fact, the Dem Governor of CT won because of the 26,000 votes he received on the Working Family Party Line. He only won the election by a total of 6400 votes. We need to learn to play the election game better.
