Thanks for sharing your experiences there. As you likely know, this is a rebuilt edifice since the original burned down; but, they were careful to reproduce it well. And I share the feeling about the
presence that one can feel, as I was awestruck when eating there. And your thoughts about the real business of the conventions being accomplished at the Tavern are shared by many historians. Cliques dined together, horses were traded and consensus was accomplished. And remember: routine alcohol intake back then was more a part of society's fabric than it is today.
Oh...if you return, don't miss Martha Washington's Chocolate Mousse Cake...worth the calories. And tomkat: you are on the list now.
I was aware of the reconstruction, but that didn’t inhibit my appreciation of the place. We ate there. The food was good though I can’t remember what we had. I DO remember the beer! The beers were based on various recipes of the founders. I believe Yards Brewery made them.
I also have the City Tavern cookbook written by the executive chef, Walter Staib. Great period recipes.
