I remember seeing him at the 1988 RNC and couldnt remember his name so i didnt feel comfortable striking up a conversation. He was standing there by himself in an isolated part of the Superdome overlooking the floor. Always regretted not having the courage to talk to him. Great man.
He was a large, imposing man with an even larger intellect. Either or both those characteristics could sometimes intimidate others. He never intended to do so. It just sometimes happens when one is in the presence of someone as articulate and quick of wit as Howard.
