MIT issued an emergency alert at 10:48 on Thursday night reporting shots fired on the university campus. The school newspaper reports, "Shots fired near 32 Vassar St (Stata Center), police officer down. Please stay inside." That report is backed up by CBS News's Bonney Kapp who reports hearing "officer down" on the police scanner just before the MIT alert went out. For now, details are scarce, but the suspect is on the loose and considered armed and extremely dangerous.

Also reported that the police activity in Watertown is because police suspect that perp may be holed up somewhere there. Say the process of clearing that area could go on for several days.
Good clarification. Also heard this morning there was an unexploded pressure cooker tossed from the perp vehicle during a chase last night.
Police say only papers and personal belongings were found in a car from Massachusetts that was stopped in Niagara Falls this morning...The driver is being charged with minor vehicle and traffic violations.

Good synopsis, according to Pete Williams:
After the brothers shot the MIT policeman, they hijacked the SUV and headed to Watertown (IIRC, 4 miles). During that ride they stopped at 3 ATMS to use car owner’s card. They were successful only once and got $800.
They told the SUV owner that they had just killed a campus police officer in Cambridge and we are the Boston Marathon bombers. Then they let him go. [ODD!]
[SUV owner calls authorities and reports all of this info, indicating that authorities had a fair degree of certainty that these were the suspects late THURS night/early Friday.]
Before they get to Watertown, police are chasing them and brothers are throwing explosives out of car window.
In Watertown, police surround vehicle. Older brother gets out, wearing explosives strapped to his chest. He is shot several times by police. [Later report I saw is that he had so many bullet wounds, doctors could not count them].
Younger brother “makes a run for it in the car, in the process driving over his brother who is laying dying in the street.”
At some point he abandons the SUV and runs on foot. He may or may not have been wounded when police shot his brother....because police have found blood as they try to track him down.

Also...some police are at the home of one of suspect’s sisters in the town of West New York, New Jersey.
Great summary. One discrepancy is the letting the driver of the hijacked car go. As I recall via scanner feeds at the time...the hijack victim told Leo that when they stopped for gas at a Shell station and were paying with cash that he (the victim) escaped.
That would certainly make more sense.
NBC is interviewing witness [Kristian Tuinzing] in neighborhood [Laurel Street]-— where gunfight took place (around 12:45am.) He said corner of Laurel St and Dexter is where it sounded like most of the action occurred.
NBC is displaying a photo on TV showing Tuinzing’s desk area where his wall calendar and a large stuffed desk chair are riddled with bullet holes.
That’s the aunt in Toronto, a real kook. More reason to shut the borders.

Sorta off-topic, but not. Last night as I followed this thread for hours, I remembered the last time I followed a live breaking news thread all night long. It was the 2002 Moscow theatre hostage crisis, in which 40 Chechnyan Jihadists took close to 900 hostages inside a Moscow theatre. The FReeper (whose username I’ve forgotten and can’t find the thread in the archives) who started that thread was in Moscow, living in an apartment across the street from the theatre.
I remember he started the thread by saying that something was happening across the street from him and he was watching it through binoculars. He stayed with it all night, and he and another FReeper in Moscow updated the thread constantly with what was visible through binoculars and with instant live translations of the Russian news reports on Moscow television. We knew everything the instant it happened, and the information was more complete and hours ahead of anything reported in MSM.
Sadly that Chechnyan hostage crisis ended in nearly a hundred citizen casualties, but also 40 dead jihadis. It was the first time I heard of Chechnyan jihadis, and it was here, live, on FR. I remember thinking that thread was the best that FR could offer...citizen reporters all across the world with instant access to such momentous developments.
It’s something of a full-circle memory for me here on FR - only now the Chechnyan jihadists are HERE.
