In the early eighties I conducted a job interview with a refugee - a young Russian Jewish engineer with his non-Jewish wife. She was from a small Russian town and when she told her kinfolk she was emigrating to America, they all wept. They were afraid she would be murdered and/or raped. It seems all of their knowledge of America came from old gangster movies and movies that portrayed city violence.
I submit the same is true in most of the world even today. Thank you Hollywood.
Years ago, my ex-fiancee's sister and two of her children were coming over from Germany to visit us in our home in western Wisconsin. They planned to fly to Milwaukee, rent a car, and then drive across the state to our home a distance of about 200 miles. The sister's husband, who was/is a German doctor, forbade her from renting a car and driving across the state, because scores of people were shot to death every day on the state's highways. He knew that to be a fact. (snicker)
