I can imagine internet board will be set up with posts like: “Here’s my AR15 - email me what you think it’s worth, so I can decide how much to insure it for.”

(Private email reply: “Really, you think it’s worth $1200? Wow, maybe I should sell it. Do you want to buy it at that price?”)

The NRA reiterated its opposition to expanded background checks in a statement to the Washington Free Beacon. The last that I heard, the NRA was against this bill. A lot of people, are jumping on an idea of trust to give away our rights. The bill has not been presented fully to read.

Remove head from dark place Laz. ANY bill that adds regulations to the 2A is going in the wrong direction. Any pol or citizen that accepts and promotes any additional infringement, no matter how small is working at direct odds with freedom and WITH the people trying to restrict it.

You really wanna bat for that team? Give this some thought Laz. You’re a smart guy.

Background checks and restrictions do nothing to reduce crime. If I wanted to do harm with a gun I could go down to the hood with a couple hundred dollars and get a throw away in under an hour.

The only way to reduce crime is to keep violent criminals in prison and for free people to protect themselves as they see fit.

Its time to stop playing defense and give the gun grabbers a bloody nose.

Gotta say, I am floored by the number of Freepers who never heard of the CCRKBA.

If Alan Gottlieb is supporting this, it’s worth listening to. However, I am still waiting to hear from the NRA on it. I have not read that they support this specific bill.

Sens. Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV)

Just this morning I heard that both of them are members of the NRA

Does the NRA approve of restricting the rights of gun owners?

It would be nice if someone would insert this:

18 USC 922(o) is hereby repealed

Hell...Chapter 4 of the GCA being repealed would be a nice start ;)

Oh yeh its all good. Thats why a Democrat is helping write the bill because it will be so good for gun owners.

Anything that includes mental health records, allows for the snooping into medical records and has exceptions written in to allow and encourage[ie, demand] submission of medical records to a database is suspect and should be rejected.

You want to know if I commited a crime or am a felon, I suppose thats ok. You want to eliminate the “gun show” loophole, I could probably live with that since it has a narrow effect but makes the grabbers feel like they did something MAJOR and hopefully they will stfu.

You want to demand that I do a backround check on you before you buy my Ruger? Not just no but hail no.

The optimum is that NO law is passed. Enforce the ones you have. They have kept 99.9% of the 300 milion guns you have from killing anyone.

I actually agree with you but was trying to deal with the situation as it is. You are correct. If these people desire a gun free America they should do the work of repealing the 2nd Amendment. They realize that will not happen and so they fall back on the emotions of the people and use the false concept of compelling state interest to pass restrictive legislation. It’s happened before. Did you know that the supposed doctrine of public airwaves which created the FCC to monitor broadcasts was developed by the FDR admin to force Father Coughlin off the air in the late 30s? The concept of public air and dangerous speech led to threats of license denial to any station that carried his broadcast.
Conservatives have not always been so eager to defend constitutional liberties either. The Warren COurt was villified for upholding liberties clearly based in the Bill of Rights in its decisions in Escobedo, Gideon, and Miranda. Much of the only difference in the campaigns of Nixon and Humphrey in ‘68 was the Nixon pledge to undo the Warren Court.Aad I believe the Republican votes for the Patriot Act and its additions and renewals have been well nigh unanimous.

Howie, they’ve been prominent along with their sister organization, the Second Amendment Foundation, for years on Free Republic.

Long history of lots of good stuff. I’m not saying that they didn’t get too cute and make a bad judgment. But they’ve definitely done enough to at least warrant reading the bill.

They are probably a group designed to protect incumbent politicians.

The incumbent Republican DA in my county made an appearance with the incumbent Democrat city mayor (both up for re-election this year) to support the “universal background check” farce.

I will vote in the GOP primary this May against the incumbent DA who supports Toomey’s farce because the opponent says we have enough gun laws right now that need to be enforced.

It’s only “Out of nowhere”if you haven’t been paying attention to gun issues Free Republic for the last decade and half now.

CCRKBA and SAF have been rather vigorous on the Constitution and legal side of the fight, and often posted here.

Never trust a Citizens Committee.

Bingo. Group think leads to erosion of liberties.

The American Conservative Union is an inside the beltway group that provides conservative cover for business as usual Republican politicians.

I guess Gottlieb is trying to give “Left Turn Toomey” some cover.

It is ‘out of nowhere’ in regards to the Press giving it attention and calling it a ‘major organization’. They are microscopic compared to the NRA or GOA and were all but ignored until they suddenly back this complete farce of a bill. Suddenly they are a ‘major organization’.
