After winning a major court battle last week, Aereo has Fox Television so freaked the network is considering becoming a cable channel, which would mean yanking their broadcast from the public airwaves:
At the National Association of Broadcasters’ annual trade show on Monday, Carey, the News Corp. president, said, “We will continue to aggressively pursue our rights in the courts, as well as pursue all relevant political avenues, and we believe we will prevail.”
Carey added: “One option could be converting the Fox broadcast network to a pay channel, which we would do in collaboration with both our content partners and affiliates.”
That might seem like a counter-intuitive move if you are still under the naïve belief television revenue is all about eyeballs. But that is simply not the case anymore. Television networks and those who own them (like News Corp.) make a fortune from cable television. That is the golden goose these days, not ratings.
Let me explain:
Right now, you and I pay outrageously expensive monthly cable bills because we are forced to pay for dozens of channels we never watch. Even if you never watch MSNBC, you are still subsidizing Rachel Maddow and every other channel in your cable package because most every network in your cable package receives a monthly fee for every customer forced into a cable package that includes them.
How do you think all these lousy networks manage to stay alive? Trust me, MSNBC is not making a whole lot of money from advertisers with fewer than a million viewers. What keeps junk like Oprah and MSNBC afloat is the monthly fee we involuntarily pay when we are forced to purchase packages that include 200 channels even though all we really want is Fox News and Turner Classic Movies.

I would LOVE to be able to cherry pick my stations. Where is the freedom in not being able to do so? :)
They began charging extra for the 10 Encore Movie stations since January but give me at least 20 station in Spanish, for no extra charge.
I informed them that no one in my household speaks fluent Spanish, nor we desire the 20 odd shopping channels, MTV no interest so take them all and give us FNC, local stations for what little news, weather and sports and movies.
The provider that allows ala carte selection will make a mint!
A la carte will be the future model and it’s already happening via the Internet.
Let’s set up a laughing party and celebrate all the out of work liberals.

We’ve already been covered in the grease from the slippery slope.
We happily cut our cable today. Our dilemma has been over college football. So after all calculations, we are saving about $85/month by cutting the cable. Hubby figures that we can always add the most basic package with ESPN in the Fall which will cost us about $40/month until the end of football season. We have xbox Live membership which we pay for via gift card purchased at the grocery store. By purchasing the gift card at the grocery, we earn Gas Rewards points. I haven’t paid attention to it, but I am wondering if Netflix has gift cards available at the grocery. That will multiply gas rewards as well.
I seldom watch tv. What tv I do watch is available on the internet. Our teenagers watch Psych and a few other shows via Netflix. Our younger children watch My Little Pony (oh it is so nauseating!) and a few other shows that our older children find for them. We have one sports nut son who will not be happy with his sports viewing options, but he will live. We will make sure he has summer work that will keep him occupied.
DirecTV USED TO do a very bastardized version of a la carte TV. However, they made it so that the channel bundles were so ridiculously cheap compared to individual channels, that you really had no choice but to buy the bundles or fork over the same amount for a single channel.
Trust me, they CAN do a la carte, but most providers don’t want to knowing full well that a majority of subscribers would pick from a small subset of channels. In addition, the liberal media would be in an absolute tizzy when they realized that no one was watching them and everyone was watching FNC, History, TCM, A&E, TBS, USA, TNT, etc.
And don’t forget PBS. Do you HONESTLY believe people would voluntarily pick to have PBS in their lineup?
Wowsers. I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago and it was as if they tried to squeeze in as much gayness as humanly possible.
Cut the cable, Roku with a huluplus account works great.
Sounds like we need to take a page from the liberal handbook and get Congress to force ala carte!
Yep, screw cable. Dump triple play for net only, get a VoIP box and Netflix, maybe an antenna, and cut %70 off your bill.

I tried cutting off cable for a few months, but it did not work. Our internet is not robust enough, Hulu Plus selection was limited. You can’t get Discovery Channel anywhere except by buying the DVDs. Plus the DVR functionality was missed.
Much of the expense on cable goes to ESPN. This is lost on me but I suppose there are ESPN fans who never watch FNC-History-Discovery-AMC etc.
By the way, if you disconnect again; they will ban you for a year. This prevents seasonal connections.
All I want is Speed, ESPN and ESPN2, and NBCSports
