Really, it’s amazing how few cashiers know how to make change anymore without the assistance of the computerized register. If you hand them some coins to make the change even, they just stare at you. So I can sort of understand why they might want someone with more skills than the average American HS grad.

I actually experienced this exact thing about 20 mins ago. I watched the cashier at Lowes struggling to count the change and was amazed at the lack of common sense. Yet, he was able to afford and design full arm tattoos.
(Disclaimor, I am not anti-tattoo. It just seems to me that priorities matter.)
A few years ago I was at a restaurant and I went to the cash register. The cashier read the bill and I told her the change before she even rang it up. She was kind of surprised. Then, when she began counting it out to me, I started miscounting it and she was thoroughly confused. I could have gotten a free meal by the time I was done. But I did the right thing, and only accepted the right change.
