I don't agree with apologizing but he didn't really apologize if you read what he said. He didn't change his position. I'm glad he stood up unlike many who claim to support traditional marriage that always manage to mince words with the states rights line. Why can't they just say "You know I disagree with homosexual behavior so of course I disagree with homosexual marriage.". Homosexuality is not correct, its not even sex technically, it is a semblance of "sex" because sex is that which has potential to produce offspring. I know we have gotten all fuzzy about sex and all blurred about what words mean but being gay is not a favorable outcome or lifestyle. If some can be happy living that lifestyle then power to them I know some who do though its not my job to judge their degree of happiness. I can judge the public side of homosexuality though and it is a disgusting and obscene movement dominated by sexual exhibitionism like below which was one of the tamer pictures from a public pride parade which had school children participating and children viewing.

You are correct. He didn’t apologize for saying something wrong, and corrected what he originally stated. He apologist to those who didn’t understated the point he was trying to make, because, in their case, he didn’t make it clearly enough.
