Pedro Quezada, a New Jersey bodega owner who struck it rich by winning Powerball, celebrates his lottery victory during a press conference on Tuesday. But the Passaic County Sheriff says Quezada cant claim his bounty, $338 million, until he pays off $29,000 in outstanding child support.

So take it out of his winnings.
He needs to call JG Wentworth!
Its your money...
How does the Sheriff have the authority to stop payment? What the h*ll is up with that?
...and learns to speak English.
No kidding. Even if you don’t take it out of his winnings before you cut the check .... it’d be better to let him collect, then just garnish the $29K. Should take his baby-mama’s lawyer about 20-minutes to draft a garnishment.
Makes no sense to withhold money he could use to pay ... waiting for him to pay. The mother would be better off if they just paid him.

Bwaaaaaa ha ha ha! Payday loan. 1,000% interest.
Sends all the wrong messages.
25 years and only now would he’d be in the front row at ESL class.
He is probably enforcing a court order already in place regarding asset seizure due to unpaid child support.
I was going to post the same thing. What ever happened to due process?
“So it was a deadbeat dad won the lotto. Lovely. So it was a deadbeat dad won the lotto. Lovely. Sends all the wrong messages.”
The term deadbeat dad has pretty much lost it’s meaning anymore. Could be nothing more than a man who was accessed child support and got laid off...
How does the hold help the child?!
Based on what I know about this guy a judge ought to put about 30% of his lotto winnings in a trust fund for his kid.
I wonder how much of that 29K actually goes to his family and how much will be sucked up by administrative costs?
Spoken like a person that has no clue what mandated child support has done to the inner-city family unit.
Perhaps you should look at that aspect.
He can't get his money right now but if you front him $29,000
“How does the hold help the child?!”
There is no hold. It’s just a silly story... This guy could barrow 50K in about 20 seconds.
In fact that’s what I would recommend. That way he’s be up to date on his child support when he came into money. You know his child support is going to go up now, and it’s better for him if he isn’t in the rears when he goes to court.
“Based on what I know about this guy”
So what do you know? Care to share?
