“You should know that the Mormons have not practiced polygamy for over 100 years, and it is an excommunicate-able offense.”
It was only banned in the LDS church in response to state pressure, so if that pressure was removed, do you really believe that they would not resume the practice?
This might help you understand the issue better, coming from the LDS perspective.
The Family, a Proclamation to the World.

This was published to the word in 1995, long before Prop 8 was a blip on the horizon.
Here’s a snip, from the end:
“we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.
WE CALL UPON responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.”
I think it wouldn’t. When I visited Temple Square a few years ago, the tour guides were mostly young women. I asked them about that and they said, “no way!”
Now yes, there are news stories about various Mormon communities having polygamy.
At the very least, there would be a schism in the LDS.
