Unless I misunderstood the eighth and ninth paragraphs of the article, it was the Jews that let the Waqf hold on to the Temple Mount after the Six Day War, and in return, the Waqf keeps destroying Jewish antiquities on there. Sounds to me like they should have taken the whole thing back in earnest, the attitude of the leftist West be damned.
The Temple Mount was turned over to the Waqf not because of the ‘leftist West’, but because the socialist establishment in Israel wanted to stamp out any Messianic hopes that might sweep through the Jews of the world.
Defense Minister Moshe Dayan actually undercut Israeli PM Levi Eshkol in immediately ceding the Temple Mount (one of “the Holy Places of others”) to the Jordanian Waqf.
