Ron’s ‘coke’ head (JCPenney CEO hires marketing exec responsible for New Coke fiasco)
NY Post ^ | 2/28/13 | JAMES COVERT

This news may be hard for JCPenney investors to swallow.

After the flailing retailer reported abysmal year-end results yesterday, CEO Ron Johnson revealed that Penney’s spring ad campaign is being masterminded by Sergio Zyman — the marketing exec behind Coca-Cola’s infamous New Coke blunder in 1984.

Johnson, who said he has been working with Zyman since last fall, didn’t mention the New Coke connection in a call with analysts.

Penney’s is doomed anyway. Many years ago they made all their signs in Spanish (even in Indiana...) and did other changes to make themselves the KMart of mall department stores. The whole gay rights thing was when a lot of people rememembered there was a JC Penney and vowed not to shop there ever again, but in reality almost none of them had been shopping there anyway. The last time I was in a Penney’s was several years ago, and it was in a desperate attempt to get photos taken...and the photographers were mean to my toddler. I haven’t bought anything at Penney’s since I was a small child and my mom made us shop there because she thought it was cheaper. Even back then I knew it sucked. Even my penny-pinching mom finally got the message about ten years ago and moved on.

My grandmother worked for JCPenney until sometime in the early 80s. So I have a soft spot for the company (at least as it was). My grandparents left all sorts of JCPenney items in their house when they passed since she got an employee discount - furnishings, tools, towels, bedding etc. Back when they were competing with Sears, and when Sears still sold quality goods, JCP gave them a good run for their money.

That said, it’s almost comical watching this company crash and burn over the last couple years. It’s like they have a death wish.

They also used to have good quality business shirts and suits for men at a good price 20 years ago. Now it’s all crap.

It’s sad to see one of the most successful American retailers going down the toilet.

They don’t need a failed marketing “genius” to figure it out. If they hired me for one day, a once very loyal former customer, I could tell what they did wrong and how to correct it. They just don’t get it.

DOPE? No, this is his first "failure."

He made Target trendy and headed the Apple retail stores.

His strategy my just be wrong for the JCP customer and brand.

Well Ron, nice try but a HOUSEWIFE knows that Target and Penneys are not even REMOTELY close and having run APPLE has nothing to do with regular retail.

Dopes keep doing the same thing that is failing but think they are the smartest people in the room. NEW COKE??? LOL!!

They chose to market to 1% of the population and lost.

Stupid is as stupid does.

This guy lives in a Vegas hotel and flies a private jet, the company HQ is in Texas. I guess he can’t be bothered actually showing up for work.

New Coke blunder???

I thought it was a well planned media frenzy with every intent of 'reintroducing' the old product once the free publicity ran its course. I would have thought he would be praised for it.

Sergio Zyman — the marketing exec behind Coca-Cola’s infamous New Coke blunder in 1984.
While Zyman may have been the marketing exec, it was Coke's CEO, Roberto Goizueta, who was primarily responsible.
BTW, a few years after the New Coke fiasco, Goizueta was named to the board of directors of Kodak ... and the rest is history.

They ought to hire the fellow that came up with the Makers Mark brainstorm.

A ton of publicity, it cost them nothing and they look like hero’s for “listening” and aquiescing to their customers desires.

It was marketing genius.

Living in Atlanta, I know a couple people who’ve worked for Coke for years, and while they deny it vehemently, I am convinced the New Coke debacle was cover for the switch from sugar to HFCS in Coke.
