“someone at the shelter complained about being fed deer meat”
I don’t mean to sound insensitive here, but if you’re in genuine need and relying on the charity of others (and this is a privately funded shelter), it seems to me you should accept what is served and be grateful to have food in your belly and a roof over your head.
You're not insensitive, you're commonsensical.
When Katrina rolled through and Texas had such an influx of people from Louisiana, I worked at a local high school that was designated one of the 'shelters'.
I KNOW everyone was scared, and I KNOW everyone was uncomfortable, but I had never heard such whining and kvetching in all my life!
Despite being served a hot breakfast AND a hot supper, the loudest complaint was they only recieved sandwiches for lunch.
That kind of 'gratitude' will make even the most charitable person UN-charitable really quick!
