Who knew the national magnetic lab moved?

The national high magnetic lab. Maybe we have two of them? This one is in Tallahassee on Paul Dirac Drive. It’s near to USF’s Engineering building.

You get your letters mixed up, USF is in Tampa, FSU is the one in Tallahassee.

I looked it up. The Bitter Magnet Lab (at MIT in Cambridge) used to be the National Magnet Lab (when I worked there in the 70’s). Now it’s not. I’ll have to see what happened. (Could be Tricky Dick’s Fault)

"They secured the backing of key Florida officials and submitted their proposal to the National Science Foundation in 1989. In so doing, the team challenged the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, home to the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory, founded a quarter of a century earlier.

Their bold plan articulated a novel vision for a magnet laboratory that would:

Feature a model federal-state partnership Serve magnet-related research in nearly all areas of science Promote interdisciplinary research Support science and technology education Work in partnership with industry to enhance the competitive position of the United States in magnet-related research and development

The proposal proved persuasive. Following a stringent peer-review competition, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory was awarded to FSU in August 1990. With its first major hurdle cleared, the team moved quickly to the next: turning their promises into bricks, mortar and magnets."

There you go.
