California Police Chief Ken James insisted earlier this month that the idea of a gun as a defensive weapon was a myth. Speaking at a news conference about gun control with California lawmakers, James explained that he was concerned with the amount of weapons owned by American citizens.
One issue that always boggles my mind is that the idea that a gun is a defensive weapon, James said. That is a myth. A gun is not a defensive weapon.
James is the Police Chief of Emeryville, California and the Police Chief Associations Firearms Committee Chairman.
A gun is an offensive weapon used to intimidate and show power, he asserted, explaining to the audience that police officers dont carry weapons to defend themselves, but to do their job in a safe and effective manner.
James statement has become a subject of ridicule among gun owners online.

That’s what’s wrong with the jack boot mentality. Offense means that you initiate aggression. Is that what we want our police officers doing? They should be counteracting against the illegal and inappropriate aggression by others. That is defense. But in such cases it is appropriate to go on the offensive against illegal aggressors. But this police chief has it wrong. He should get his a$$ fired.
Ha, ha! This is a cop's definition for when he pulls your grandma over for a speeding ticket.
So, let’s say a bad guy isn’t intimidated by the show of power. What does this clown use to defend himself? Does he flash his badge and try to blind him? Or jiggle his belt so the leather makes that cool squeaking sound? Or pull his cap down a bit more over his eyes? Or frown harder? Beg the guy not to shoot him?
It is an offensive weapon in the hands of the police. That’s the fundamental problem with the mindset of the modern police force. It sees its role as one of enforcing compliance by means of the threat of lethal force.
“Hes right you know. Its an offensive weapon to gun down homeless people in the streets and family pets when they >ahem< go to the wrong house.”
Don’t forget killing vehicles around their innocent occupants.
That Chief reminds me of the Sheriff of Harlan County, Season 3, JUSTIFIED....
Or to shoot up pickup trucks of Mexican delivery ladies or White surfer dudes.
Somewhere around half the people in the country agree with him. Scary, ain’t it?
