WASHINGTON -- Sen. Mike Johanns called out his fellow Senate Republicans on Thursday for claiming that they aren't technically filibustering as they try to hold up Chuck Hagel's nomination to be defense secretary.
"It's a filibuster," Johanns said. "If the Democrats were doing this, we would be hollering that this was a filibuster and probably did in the past."
A number of Republicans are pushing to delay consideration of Hagel, the former GOP senator from Nebraska, requiring a 60-vote threshold on a procedural vote that Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., scheduled for Friday.

Well, there goes another vote. Reid will have his 60 votes by Friday. What’s his reasoning? The Republicans won’t call a Filibuster a Filibuster, so he’s going to vote against it. Brilliant.
What’s the matter with Nebraska? The state is reliably Republican in every presidential election and in the past has sent solid conservatives to the Senate such as Kenneth Wherry, Carl Curtis and Roman Hruska.
Jim Exon was a VERY Conservative Democrat(back when there WAS such a “creature”). I was a good guy.
I mean...HE was a good guy.
It's the first law of liberal newsrooms. Hello New York Times... are you there? Are you still in business?
I’ll be blunt. Johanns is making himself appear to be a Nazi. One bad apple speaking too loudly: not good public affairs for Nebraska.
Even if what you say is true, Pubs have forever discredited themselves in my eyes by focusing on Hagel and letting Kerry off scott free. Not that I credited them with much before.
I think they wanted Kerry out of the senate because they thought Brown was going to run, although they wanted him out of the senate anyway.
If that’s true they’re idiots. In the Senate he’s one of the 53 or whatever majority and one of a gang of senior Dems. At state he’s it; he’s the Grand High Poobah. And maybe if Clinton can do it without crashing and burning until late into the fourth year, maybe it doesn’t matter. Then again, Kerry is probably more of a True Believer than Hillary.
State’s a worthless post. And he’ll be out of power in four years, instead of another possible twelve or eighteen years in the senate. I live in MA and we are all glad he is gone and is no longer our representative in the congress.
Why couldn’t he run for senate again later? He went back after losing a presidential bid, for pete’s sake, which used to be good enough reason to crawl into a hole forever.
By the wag, if state is so worthless what makes defense so damn important?
He could run again. There’s nothing that could stop him, except there may be no open seat. I don’t see Kerry challenging a sitting democrat to try to get back into the senate. Look at what happened to Bob Kerrey, the people rejected him. Dan Coats got back in after leaving and Goldwater and Humphrey did too but it’s rare.
The department of State is more or less sipping tea and talking with foreign leaders. It’s never been a powerful or influential post since the President is the real secretary of state.
Defense on the other hand in my opinion is a far more important position. Obama wants to gut the military, like any leftist does. They hate the military. And a republican doing it would add so much credibility. Hagel is in reality, a democrat and from his testimony is not even qualified for the position. He doesn’t even appear to be an able administrator. That puts the defense of the country in danger.
