A six-day California manhunt ended Tuesday with rogue ex-cop Christopher Dorner apparently dying in a cabin fire on Bear Mountain.
One of many big questions to be answered is how the deadly fire was started.
Multiple unconfirmed audio clips appear to show police officers talking about burning down the cabin in which the alleged cop-killer was hiding.
Deliberately starting a fire, rather than waiting out the suspect, could be seen as an extreme measure.

In an unconfirmed video showing live footage from KCAL9 Los Angeles, officers are apparently caught in the background around the 20 second mark saying, "burn that f------ house down." It continues:
[Inaudible]
"Burn him out!"
"Get to him right now, f------ burn this motherf-----!"
Another unconfirmed video posted to YouTube of television coverage from CBS 2 captures officers apparently saying, "burn it down, burn it down ... get the gas." Another officer says, "yeah, burn it down." The exchange happens around the 1:24 mark:
The Guardian reports that journalist Max Blumenthal was listening to the police scanners, and live-tweeting the event.
On the scanners, Blumenthal reports hearing an exchange where the police talk about using "burners." The Daily Caller is reporting that is police slang for tear gas.
"All right, Steve, we're gonna go, we're gonna go forward with the plan, with the burner."
"Copy," is the response.
"We want it, like we talked about."
"Seven burners deployed and we have a fire," says the first voice.
"Copy. Seven burners deployed and we have a fire," responds a female voice.

Amazing, but yet illustrative.
I no longer wonder how the inhumane tragedies of history happened.
Media puts out info, enemy on the loose, execute said individual and the crowds cheer.
Whip up a frenzy, and gain support of the masses, celebrate the end of the Constitution and the rule of law.
Right on FR, sad.
They had him contained and they had cover. As much as I’m glad he’s dead, the cops executed him. We can’t pick and choose which times this is appropriate.
Problem with this LEO attitude is that the next nutjob will make sure they take out more people before they get offed
They took stupid fire risk in an area notorious for dry spells and forest fires. Would it have been OK if they burned innocent folks houses and property at the same time ?
I understand your revulsion, but in point of fact the law does not make a distinction between types of deadly force. If it is legally acceptable to kill, the means by which it is accomplished are not an issue. Citizens have been killed by police cars, police flashlights, and for all I know police dogs. How the killing was carried out didn’t matter if the facts established that the officer was legally justified.
On one of the tapes it is stated that there is a fire outside the cabin...And someone told another to get the fire truck in there that sittin’ down the road...
Witness to what? The guy was a mass murderer engaged in a battle against the cops. The cops won.
I wonder how many folks cheering the burning of Dorner also have a “They’ll take my gun when they pry it from my cold dead hands!” bumper sticker.
Perhaps I can start selling a “.... pry it from by charred dead hands!” version on Ebay, now.
And we are still debating if Major Nadal Hassan can be forced to shave his beard before trial?
Quite a contrast in versions of “Rule of Law” and “innocent until proven guilty”.
No, I am NOT a fan of Dorner. I just don’t like the propensity of the police to drop everything else and every cop on the force converge when one of their own is in danger, yet take their own sweet time when an ordinary citizen asks for help. They they start blazing away at women delivering papers, the family dog, etc.
Anyone ever hear of discipline? Patience?
I agree, this is a dangerous precedent in my view.
What's next, drone strikes on media/government created enemies?
Will that be cheered here as well?
I hope not, but I wouldn't be surprised.
On a serious note, do our men in Afghanistan have the same leeway when fighting the tallywackers?
I suspect if they did what our police force just did they would be brought back and tried for murder.
I'd burn down the cabin, pay the owner for her loss of property, then sleep like a baby.
A nation of laws does not permit the police to be also the judges and the executioners. It is one short step to death squads.
Besides, they had no idea who [else] was in the cabin.
Killing Dorner this way is guaranteed to make him a martyr among those who approved his methods. A trial would have exposed his crimes and showed him for what he was (an angry egotist who was only concerned about what OTHERS do to HIM.) Hardly a word in his manifesto is dedicated to what he did to others. The manifesto, actually, opens with declaration that his actions, however evil, are necessary and should be properly understood by the unwashed masses. You can't get more narcissist than that.
A dead idol is very convenient. He holds no surprises - he already has done all his activities. He already said all that he is ever going to say; but new words can be easily attributed to him, and who is going to challenge that? This is why martyrs are idolized. It's much easier to wear a T-shirt with Che Guevara's photo than to deal with the live Che who would shoot you on sight if he wants to.
” How the killing was carried out didnt matter if the facts established that the officer was legally justified.”
An officer is never legally justified in executing a suspect. In our system of government that would be left for the courts and the state. Indeed, they have an obligation to protect the life of the suspect.
Idiocracy is here now.
Im sure that was part of tue discussion at briefngs. I hate living in a police state.

I haven't seen the murder charges proved but no doubt he fired on the cops.
Let me ask you a question, what if those Asian lady paper deliverers returned fire?
What say you?
Would you also hand out judge dredd uniforms?
They DID burn innocent folks’ property. That wasn’t the perp’s cabin.
The cops willfully destroyed the property of some law-abiding citizen.
Anti police?
They're not police anymore they're union goons.
I'd burn down the cabin, pay the owner for her loss of property, then sleep like a baby.
Good, then YOU pay for it....oh, and if it was your home is suspect you'd be singing a different tune.
Amazing how willing some are here to negate the rights of others when they are not affected and they've been convinced it was "right"
“Like you, I’m getting damned tired of the anti-police faction on FR.
I’d burn down the cabin, pay the owner for her loss of property, then sleep like a baby.”
Ding, Ding!! We have a winner! For the most ironic post ever on Free Republic.
See, some folks believe that the cops many times overstep their bounds. And, are not held responsible. Indeed, trample on the rights of suspects and non-suspects alike. A recent example would be....Oh, I don’t know.....burning an alleged murderer alive? Some would say that the cops administered their own “justice”. But then, they would be the Cop Haters.
But maybe he shot himself first. That would be a whole lot better than being burned alive. At any rate, I just hope it’s not you or I that “they” decide needs to be taken care of, next.
