Authorities in Big Bear have spotted fresh tracks believed to be those of a fugitive ex-Los Angeles police officer wanted in connection with a series of shootings and are combing the area for him, a Fire Department official told The Times.
Big Bear Lake Fire Department Asst. Chief Mark Mills also said the burning pickup discovered on a forest road has been linked to Christopher Jordan Dorner, 33, sought in connection with a series of shootings that have left three people dead and two wounded.
TV helicopters showed the pickup being readied to be towed from the scene.
The truck was discovered hours into an intensive manhunt for Dorner that spanned Southern California. Although sources said there had been multiple reported sightings of Dorner's truck in the Big Bear area on Thursday, the burnt truck was too badly charred to immediately confirm it was his.
Meanwhile, the mountain community locked down schools and closed the nearby Bear Mountain Resort as a fatigue-clad SWAT team walked through the woods, rifles drawn.
Sean Jacques, director of loss prevention for Big Bear Mountain Resorts, said that after the burning truck was discovered on a forest service road, local law enforcement told resort officials to keep an eye out for Dorner and provided a description of the suspect.

Well, we’ll see. If someone’s truck is found burning on a “service road” (in other words mountain access) he either ditched it on purpose and burned it because he had another vehicle and wanted a distraction, or he’s one hell of a lousy driver.
I’m guessing that he knew all the highways were covered, so he climbed Big Bear, got a better 4X4 vehicle, burned the other one so the cops would crowd it for a few hours, and probably blew through Lucerne Valley and into the desert matrix of offroad area before the Big Bear folks had the sense to radio ahead.
I’m thinking that he was probably in the military once and knows 29 Palms/Bicycle Lake and has a good weeks worth of food, a 4X4 vehicle, and a place to hide under. Not hard to find if you look.
I know Big Bear, and I can tell you that they are in terror.
For those who are totally unarmed, and who are lacking talent and personalities for this kind of situation, they are incredibly vulnerable in their cabins and isolation.
Even the armed and prepared are vulnerable, especially if they are trying to manage a household of others.
That was my thought when I saw the picture of the truck burning. You would be able to see that for miles. And now, dozens if not hundreds of cops are on that mountain, right where his signal led them.
By the book. Just like running down a checklist.
If he follows his training, and doesn't make mistakes, this is going to be very, very expensive. In gold and blood.

They tried that in Rambo.
“...98.7% white community of Big Bear.”
And the remaining 1.3% is Asian, right ?
After thinking through my own experiences in Cali, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on top of Ord mountain with a rifle, binoculars, and some food with his vehicle stowed in some nook in Ord Valley.
>>rifles drawn?<<
Of course. Don’t you have a hip holster for your AR-15? That’s so you can ‘quick draw’ your assault weapon just like Jesse James did in the Old West. Military-style rifle holsters are also popular with people who shoot up schools. Adam Lanza had one at Newtown, don’t you know?

This ain’t a movie
If he had a plan, he wouldn't have tried to unsuccessfully steal a boat in San Diego this morning.
I suppose he could have pre-positioned a vehicle up in Big Bear and caused LEAs to focus there because of a time-controlled vehicle fire, and is therefore now miles away...
... but I suspect that he's delusional. If he's still up there in the snow, I can't believe he's never considered all the Thermal/FLIR that would be searching for him. That's cheap enough that even podunk LEAs can afford at least one quality unit.
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe he paid someone to take his truck up there and burn it.
Of course, could have stashed another vehicle there, now that the Titan was “burned” in more than one way.
I think he would be smart to hole up for a week and let the LAPD get tired of being on alert all day.
reasonable hypothesis
he was probably in the military
please correct me someone (if incorrect). This perp is ex-military.
I still think it's a diversion. He's drawn attention to where he wants it. The opfor is reacting. He's inside their OODA loop.
If he truly does want to die on a mountain, I'm sure he'll be accomodated.

He’s getting ready for a long hibernation.
Headline spotted at link. Of course he's sick. He says he supports gun control, Obama, and Piers Morgan.
Really sick.
He tried to get a boat in San Diego and failed. This makes me think this plan B at best. Plan Bs don’t work well in snow.
They have verified the VIN number on the burnt truck as his.
Infrared doesn’t see thru trees.
Yep, that’s the one. A serious nutcase, with serious shooting skills. IIRC, that episode created enough of a stir that it was never added to the cycle of episodes to be re-run.
