A Miami teen's bad attitude got her 30 days behind bars after the judge decided he wasn't going to put up with it.

Penelope Soto, 18, was in Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat's bond court Monday on charges of possessing Xanax, Local 10 reported Monday.

Rodriguez-Chomat was prepared to let her off on a $5,000 bond when the giggling girl made the mistake of sarcastically saying "Adios" before flitting away from the bench, NBC Miami reported Tuesday.

But the judge wasn't having her sarcastic attitude and upped her bail to $10,000.

"Are you serious?" Soto asked, to which Rodriguez-Chomat replied that he was, adding "Adios."

"[Expletive] you," Soto said, raising her middle finger as she walked out of court, according to NBC Miami.

Rodriguez-Chomat then called the girl back again, charged her with contempt of court, and sentenced her to 30 days behind bars.

Actions have consequences and this young lady has found that out. Perhaps mama should have taught her that before now.

Several years ago, I had a friend who was arrested for a bar fight. He got an attorney and a plea deal was arranged, fine and probation. The judge told him, “I understand that you were angry with the other guy and you hit him but why did you continue to hit him”. My friends reply was, “he was still twitching your honor”. Two weeks in the county lock up for that remark.

How does a guy get a hyphen? Anyway, good for him! That purple streak in her hair tells me a lot.

Good example of the “you’re the greatest in the world at everything you do sweetie” upbringing.

What happens when youts are taught to have high (but unearned) self esteem. Also, she obviously has impulse control issues as well as being dumb as a stump. She should get 30 days for being a dumbass if for nothing else.

The judge was right on target with the way he handled her insolence. The judge’s heavy accent made him difficult to understand, at least for me.

Years ago my best friends older brother was arrested for being in a bar fight and when the police searched him they found a little .25 caliber Saturday Night Special hidden in his boot.

When posting bail the judge asked him about the gun and so the story goes my friends brother replied “I didn’t even think to use it your Honor.” To which the judge replied something like “You didn’t want to kill him then?” His reply was “It’s a .25, all it would do is give me an advantage with the fist fight that followed.”

Judge went from $1k to $10k becasue of his smart-ass answer.

She is an idiot, but I found the ruling to be excessive.

My guess is that he married some power lawyer or politician before he was anointed judge. He took her name and she took his so that they could share the glory. He found the girl guilty of direct civil contempt. Judges are totally in control in their own courtrooms. If he had sentenced her to more he might have been overruled by his admin judge but 30 days is reasonable. We’ve had judges here kick people out of court for wearing shower shoes and even an American flag jackets. I was found in direct contempt once because in arguing my client’s case, I kept interrupting the other lawyer. After two or three times I was fined $25.00. I consider it a badge of honor - sort of like fouling out in basketball - if it doesn’t happen at least once, you’re not playing hard enough. But other than that, the judge represents the entire rule of law and even if I don’t respect the person who is the judge, I always stand when he/she enters the room. Same with priests.

There is an old story making its rounds in DC in the 70’s. Seems some superfly type had been arrested for pandering. He showed up in court completely dressed for the role including the hat with feather and white suit. Judge on a bench hearing fined him $300. Superfly made a grand gesture of pulling a wad of bills out of his pocket and tossing three bengamins up onto the judges bench. The judge raked them in as if he was in Vegas and then said to him, now reach into your other pocket and pull out 30 days.

You’re right. She’s old enough to have learned THIS lesson long ago.

Her mouth wrote a check her a^% couldn’t cash!!

Too late to be learning basics like this!

It’s pretty typical though. I meet a lot of young folks who think smart mouth = smart.

NOT!

I always wonder where they grew up. When I was a youngster and in MY neighborhood, you'd get your clock cleanded daily if you mouthed off whenever you felt like it and to whomever you wanted. It was tough ... but it was a polite neighborhood. As a matter of fact, no one felt sorry for the jerk who was always getting stomped on for that kind of loudmouth, smart a@& stuff... everyone else knew this idiot was not smart enough to figure out that it didn’t work!
