Why is there gas coming out the side?

It’s probably a ported barrel.
Little holes drilled in it so that some of the gas, and force, is expended on a different plane than the rest. It helps to manage recoil and pushes the barrel down (back on target) rather than back (into the shooter).

The barrel must be ported on top. It keeps the muzzle flip down and recoil low especially on multiple shots in a row.
