The U.S. new car market was up strongly in January. GM and Ford surprised analysts with double digit sales rates. Toyota, up 26.6 percent also surprised.
GM is up 16 percent on very strong sales of the Equinox and its Silverado and Sierra pickups.
Ford prints a 22 percent increase, powered by the Fusion. Lincoln sales are down 18 percent while customers wait for the MKZ to arrive in quantity at their dealers.
Chrysler was up 16 percent, but jaded analysts expected more.
Detroit OEMs and analysts expect the SAAR to be in the mid 15 million range

Trading in vehicles soaked by hurricane Sandy?
Channel stuffing games!!!
FWIW, I don’t like the ‘sitting in a bathtub’ interiors popular now either. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t great transportation.
These are retail sales, channel stuffing is wholesale numbers.
What does it tell you that Saturn and Saab (I think) are defunct?
These are retail numbers.
Channel stuffing is pushing cars onto dealers which is wholesale numbers.
My thoughts exactly, except that the only car companies who have resisted pandering to gays are Hyundai-Kia and the now-defunct Suzuki.
BTW those vehicles are in salvage lots, not being traded in.
Thousands and thousands of them
I didn’t realize that. Full disclosure: I own a Suzuki 4WD and use it offroad like an oversize quad.
Still a lot of new 2012 Suzukis for sale, and the company is fine financially worldwide so parts should still be available. Motorcycles, ATVs and marine products will still sell here.
I mean I didn’t know about the lack of pandering. Knew about U.S. Suzuki Automotive’s decision. A dealer here has been trying to sell a new 2012 Equator pickup for about $22,000 since maybe late December and hasn’t had any takers. One problem with Suzuki’s parts distribution (in automotive) is that they have always tended to run out of high demand (poorly designed) parts, like the heater control on my Sidekick. I had to make one.
Isn’t the Equator about 97% Nissan Frontier content?
That should make the parts available via them, no?
I don’t believe it in the least. About a month ago or so, I wrote an observation about the number of cars and trucks on the dealers lots. The number of cars and trucks on the lots have not gone down, they have increased. They are over flowing the dealer lots and are being parked on adjacent lots and fields. What Government Motors has done is shipped the vehicles to the dealers and counted them as sold. Gigantic management and employee bonuses are in the offing because of the double digit “sales”. Watch the next 6 months and wait for the “unexpected” drop in Government Motors sales.
That’s crazy. Don’t people know that the Suzuki Equator is/was built by Nissan? It is a re-badged Nissan Frontier. If it’s 22K for 4x4 crew cab that is a killer deal. Where is it so I can buy it! I’ve owned two Frontier’s and the 05 and up are awesome trucks
It is based on the Frontier but with a lot of cheaper substitutions, especially cosmetically. I didn’t mean that customers would have trouble getting Equator parts any time soon anyway. Ten-15 years down the road, yeah, you will probably be using a lot of Nissan parts, except for emissions-related stuff which you might have trouble installing in some states. Other disclosure: I still run a 1986 hardbody — has never had any significant work other than normal maintenance. Drive it most days especially recently.
No, not a crew cab and I don’t believe it’s a 4WD (not positive). It may not even have A/C, which is not standard on the Equator.

I’m also tickled that Hyundai and Kia aren’t pandering to gays.
Kia is headed upscale with the new Cadenza (entry-level luxury) and the true-upscale Quoris.
That’s what I thought also. Was a thread a few years ago on another board on the subject.
