NRA chief: Why we fight for gun rights
CNN ^ | February 1, 2013 | David Keene

After President Lyndon Johnson signed the Gun Control Act of 1968, many anti-gun politicians looked forward to the day when they could completely ban the sale and ownership of firearms and perhaps even confiscate those already in private hands.

--snip--

Anyone who doubts this need only look at what happened in the literally bankrupt city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, last week. The organizers of the largest outdoor show in the country, the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show, announced that they would not allow the display or presence of the firearms the president likes to demonize as assault weapons. Within days, more than 300 vendors withdrew in protest as the NRA and others urged Second Amendment supporters to boycott the event.

Soon after, show organizers announced it was being postponed indefinitely. This was the largest outdoor show in the country. It draws a huge crowd every year and according to local estimates, about $80 million won't be arriving in the pockets and coffers of the pro-Bloomberg, anti-gun mayor of Harrisburg now.

As the battle over restricting Second Amendment rights continues, other elected officials under pressure from the Obama administration to ignore the feelings and deep beliefs of some of their constituents will learn a similar lesson.

Hundreds of self-proclaimed gun advocates didn't believe Obama was anti-gun based on his first term and wrote the NRA saying we were using scare tactics to have our way: Now they know.

Second Amendment supporters are in no mood to give those who would deny them their rights a pass and will vote in the next election in the same united way they responded to the insult leveled at them by the organizers of the Harrisburg show.

I find it interesting that the NRA is so often mentioned in articles about the boycott of the ESOS. The NRA was late to the dance. Vendors and thousands of customers were boycotting the show long before the NRA. Those same people pressured the NRA to drop out of the show.

While I am a member of the NRA, I do not trust them to advocate on my behalf. They are too willing to compromise our rights.

Our communists controlled Courts and Federal Government is fast closing in on our freedoms. Removing guns from our hands is the first step to a dictatorship and controlling our speech is next. America must wake up and take back the Senate and keep the house and in the meanwhile dump RINOs.

I always wonder about any person or orginization that would support Harry Reid. Other than the Mafia. I guess we’ll see how that goes. Although Harry has been pretty quiet since the SHTF. If I spent my time and money getting dirty Harry elected I would expect him to be a little more vocal.

US Navy Vet ~ “ That “Gun Show” in PA was shut down by 2nd Amendment US Citizens not because of the NRA but in SPITE of them(the NRA).”

Agreed !
It was American citizens who defend the 2nd Amendment , not any organization.
Outdoor Sportsmen ( Hunters /plinkers /fishermen /hikers / adventurers / etc.)
who have said in a unified voice: ENOUGH OVER REACH

There are no “assault guns” except for those 7,000 ordered
by Dept.Of Homeland Security/ our government (fully auto ).
They are U.S. military grade with full automatic capacity.
Where are those guns going ? No one has yet explained !

In New York , the Governor has passed,in ‘emergency session’
a SAFE Act bill, unconstitutionally banning certain weapons in N.Y .
Legislators had 20 minutes to read and review the bill before it got rammed through.
There was no need for an ‘emergency’ vote , except that Andy Cuomo wanted notariety
He wants to be considered a contender for the Democrat Presidential nomination in 2016 !
It is the most drastic anti-Second Amendment , unConstitutional legislation
ever fabricated behind closed doors , and voted on in the middle of the night.
The fact that his “assault Weapons “ ban (military type)were responsible
for only 5 out of 769 homicides in all New York (or .007 %)makes it
hardly an ‘emergency ‘, or public safty crisis .
I hope the citizens of the country remember this as Cuomo’s legacy, and remember this in 2016 .

We all stand together as Outdoor Sportsmen ( Hunters /plinkers /fishermen /hikers / adventurers / etc.)
OR ,
We all fall together !

I think gun right supporters need to take a look at the different Second Amendment groups to see which one they feel is more in line with their way of thinking. Take a little time to research their positions on all gun issues, along with their history of fighting for your gun rights. The NRA is by far the biggest of these organizations, but many are not happy with their past compromises.

National Rifle Association

Gun Owners of America

Welcome to Oath Keepers

Oath Keepers is a non-partisan association of current and formerly serving military, reserves, National Guard, veterans, Peace Officers, and Fire Fighters who will fulfill the Oath we swore, with the support of like minded citizens who take an Oath to stand with us, to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, so help us God. Our Oath is to the Constitution

The NRA did not endorse Reid in 2010.

The NRA did not endorse Reid in 2010. Ditto Angle. The NRA was neutral. Why do you think neither Reid nor Pelosi would touch a renewal of the so called "assault weapons" ban? It would kill too many rats in Congress.

Good group, but how much power does their lobby have in DC?

“Good group, but how much power does their lobby have in DC?”

I believe that goes as far as their funding, the more support they get the more they’ll be able to lobby and fund legal challenges. GOA is no compromise and definitely is worthy of our support.

Good to hear. NJ/PA is in the 3rd circuit which is loaded with Reagan and Bush appointees, hope we start to see some legal challenges to NJ’s unconstitutional gun laws by the gun organizations.
