I remember when George Washington threw up his hands and said it was too late, the British had won too many battles, and went home to Mt. Vernon to sulk.
Washington didn’t quit - but most of his men did. And when crossing the Delaware, the other two Generals determined that “conditions weren’t right” and left Washington on his own.

Washington crossing the Delaware was a very gutsy move, and turned out to be the single event that shifted the momentum of the Revolutionary War. After suffering heavy losses at Long Island and Manhattan, George Washington found himself in a precarious situation. To this point he had lost the majority of the battles that they had fought, and the summer zeal of the patriots desiring to fight for their independence had faded, and his troops were deserting as the leaves turned colors and fell from the trees.
Almost half of the 5,000 men that remained of his army were ill and unfit for duty.....
