Swartz helped create Reddit and drafted an early version of the RSS format, a Web feed that syndicates popular headlines.
Friends yesterday called him a prolific intellectual and a computer geek legend who had long suffered from depression.
We have lost someone today who had more work to do and who made the world a better place, his pal Cory Doctorow wrote on the blog Biong Boing.
Swartz was also an avid Internet activist, who pushed to make web files open to the public. He opposed the Stop Online Piracy Act, which keeps hackers from swiping web content such as music and movies.
But that mindset got him into trouble in June 2012, when federal officers arrested him for allegedly downloading academic journals on the subscription-only website JSTOR.com.
He pleaded not guilty to fraud in 2012 but the case remained open at the time of his death. He faced decades in prison and a fortune in fines.

Reddit is a loony liberal website. The level of hatred there might have something to do with his depression. That kind of negativity has got to take a toll eventually..
Ban rope!
His choice to commit hari kari. Some sub reddits are good. But mostly idiot lefties with no clue.
“Reddit is a loony liberal website’
Yup.
Suicide, or autoerotic asphyxiation? I’d bet on the latter
A few years ago I went on Reddit to see what it was all about. Let’s just say I saw what it’s all about and I made a quick one-way exit.
Sounds like there should be background checks for looney leftist progressives when attempting to buy rope. This young man is a hero, he spent his entire Reddit fortune to advance the freedom of average Americans, and was persecuted by AG holder’s personal attack dog for his activism to advance personal freedom and the concepts of equality under the law for all men...
The responses I’ve seen on FR are absolutely disgraceful, and are quite bluntly an indictment on the intellectual lazyness of the remaining user base here.
I completely agree with you. The kid was a brainiac and they chose not to prosecute, but to persecute.
This is just a damn shame.
Then you need to meet a bitch by the name of Carmen Ortiz.
You should try Hacker News. It's Reddit done right, more or less.
FR is where I go when I'm bored about politics. HN is a good place to go when you're bored, period. Out of the thirty stories at any one time, at least one is likely to be interesting.
This guy was in favor of online piracy?
Another hapless tech murdered by Eric Holder and Obama.
‘Ban the internet. If it saves one life, isn’t it worth it?’
That may be closer than anyone believes.
