Too young! That’ll be the day.
Grapevine was a Barrett Strong/Norman Whitfield composition that went out to several Motown artists, but The Pips version was substandard compared to the heavily orchestrated Marvin Gaye version. I love the triple drummers on Marvin’s version. It’s the legends Benny “Papa Zita” Benjamin and Richard “Pistol” Allen along with relative newcomer Uriel Jones on trap sets as well as Eddie “Bongo” Brown doing his thing. There’s so much going on without overwhelming Marvin’s vocal that it’s just awesome. Johnny Griffith plays Fender Rhodes and the great James Jamerson cooks the bass until it’s sizzles. It was all done live and remains one of the greatest recordings of all time imho.
Thank you for the Motown trbute Drumbo....RIP Patti Page.
Look for some fresh lemons in your near future!
