IL:Demand for gun control surges, and so does demand for guns

Illinois lawmakers advanced legislation this week that would ban military-caliber guns as well as magazines that hold more than ten rounds of ammunition. The moves came in response to the Newtown massacre—and to the end of another bloody year in the streets of Chicago.

They also highlighted the fact that Illinois is the center of our nation's confusing and contradictory approach to guns.

Consider:

1. Chicago shows that tough laws and rhetoric alone won't stop gun violence.

Chicago already has the most restrictive firearm laws in the country: handgun owners must undergo three background checks, take a training class, practice shooting at a range, and register with the police department.

In addition to Chicago's laws, the state has a network of gun regulations. Anyone owning or possessing a firearm must complete a background check and apply for a state-issued firearm owner's identification (FOID) card. Waiting periods are required to purchase handguns and rifles. Gang members or felons caught with weapons face severe penalties.

Illinois was also the last state to prohibit carrying guns, though a federal appeals court overturned the law last month.

Despite all of this, the city finished 2012 with 506 homicides. It's the highest mark among major cities—by far.

Even more revealing is the total number of shootings, since the vast majority of slayings involve guns. All told, 2,460 people were shot in Chicago last year—more than 47 a week. New York City, which has three times the population, averaged 31 shootings a week through late December. In Los Angeles, with about one and a half times as many people as Chicago, there were about 23 a week.

2. Gun rights advocates decry the restrictions at the city and state level, arguing that they merely make it difficult for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves.

***as well as magazines that hold more than ten rounds of ammunition.***

But what about these?

John Kennedy killed with a 5 shot bolt action rifle.

Bobby Kennedy with a .22 Iver Johnson Cadet revolver.

George Wallace wounded with a 5 shot Charter Arms .38spl.

Gerald Ford attacked with a 7 shot 1911 semi auto.

Edmond OK post office with two National Guard 7 shot 1911 pistols.

Ronald Reagan and Jim Brady with an RG-14 .22 pistol.

What do they all have in common? NONE over 7 rounds, yet after each one came a cry of panic to ban them.

EVERYONE is missing the underlying story the whole gun debate issue.

Instead of selling off their guns, Americans are buying in record numbers a (perceived) soon to be illegal product.

What does that tell you?

It tells me that every day Joe American is telling the Government to go $&@* itself and has no intention of turning over their weapons regardless of what our Prince and Princesses tell them to do.

I would keep a keen ear and eye on the companies that manufacture the guns and the ammunition companies.

Obama may stage a series of attempts to shut them down solidly, even to go as far as to intercept new products as they are being shipped.

And I am willing to bet those delivery folks are most definitely up arming and running in convoys.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Don't forget the 7.62x54

All chambered in countless bolt-action rifles, lever-action rifles (.45-70, etc.), and revolvers.

Your list is too limited. During WWII virtually every caliber available was sent to England after Dunkirk.

In the US, the .22LR was used for training. The .38 Special was used by guards at military bases. I remember reading that some military people in Washington State used 30-30 lever actions. Keep in mind that this was back when the Military was using pieces of 2x4 wood to train with in place of rifles.

If the anti’s want to look hard enough, I bet they could find instances of ANY caliber being used by the military at some time. And, don’t think they won’t.

Thanks for that. This simple truth seems to be lost on the media and pols. Why would anyone buy these and then in short order give them up? Its one of those warning signs that should be carefully considered, speaking volumes more than a writing campaign could. I fear no one is listening though — that liberals feel they have a ‘mandate’. In any event continued pushing will lead to shooting. Once that starts it will be hard to stop — civil conflicts are just that way, brutal and nasty affairs. I very very much hope liberals take a time out to consider what they’re about.

They want all of them. The anti-gunners goal is to quote the late and unlamented black democratic mayor of Atlanta Mainturd Jackasson, " we want a society where only the police and the military are armed."

Anti gunners cannot be reasoned with. They cannot be bargained with. They never give up, they feel no sympathy for those of us wanting to protect our rights. They feel no fear, because they have nothing to lose, and they know full well that we're too law abiding to take condign second amendment action. All the losses are on our side. And they will never stop trying to enslave us until we are enslaved, we are killed "resisting arrest" by their beloved police, or they and their JBTs are dead.

Why? So he can have Holder sell them to Mexican drug cartels?

Don't forget .30-30! The reference I need is packed in a box right now, but if I remember correctly, the US Army issued Model 94 Winchesters to teamsters/wagon drivers in Europe, during the First World War.

Banning .30-30 lever actions would be a nice wake up call for the Great State of Ill, and the rest of the country as well!
