For Icelanders it is about preserving their unique ancient culture and language, not so much about government "control" of the people. Related: they don't use English words for new things like computer or tissue. They have a committee that creates Icelandic language words for these new things.
Again, not about control of the people, it's about preserving their language and culture.

Freedom to name your own kid . . . I’m pretty sure that trumps a state’s arbitrary desire to “preserve” its “culture,” however the state defines “culture.”
