A 15-year-old is suing the Icelandic state for the right to legally use the name given to her by her mother. The problem? Blaer, which means "light breeze" in Icelandic, is not on a list approved by the government.

“... decision to grow up”.
I believe that was his New Year’s pledge.. last year. Far as I know, he kept it. I hope he doesn’t ever, EVER grow up. IMHO.
Nice and righteous but stop eating junk food. Both of them. But will never happen because they are having too much fun tripping through life
I was not citing a name from a list, I was making one up as I could not directly remember any examples. As I create several hundred student accounts every semester, this is not some imaginary bugaboo.
I can assure you the mauling is there, and it is not a cultural thing. While you can tell from last names that some of that is the case (ie, hispanic last names), it is more a general balkanization of spellings of common names.
Yes, I suppose you can rationalize this with whatever you like, but inflicting a name on your child which EVERYONE will misspell is to do them a disservice.
This kind of situation just goes to show why we need name control here in the US. Name violence can not be tolerated.
Freedom to name your own kid . . . I’m pretty sure that trumps a state’s arbitrary desire to “preserve” its “culture,” however the state defines “culture.”
That would make an interesting and instructive test case to see how board ownership deals with stalking on his board.
I put it under, "People do some weird stuff."

I agree. My children all have stolid names with standard spellings (except for a nickname, Elen with one L). I use my maiden name, officially, because of the nuisance of spelling my husband's name for everyone. Of course, I have to do that anyway, with ten children, but eventually they'll all grow up and do it for themselvs. Even my 3-year-old corrects mispronunciations of their name without missing a beat ;-).
Laz was just kidding, don-0. Some of the freepers do that from time to time. Kid, joke, tease... Just my two cents but what would Free Republic be without the occasional joke, funny picture or teasing amongst members? There is enough going on in the world and in this country right now to make anyone a bit uptight and uber serious. Is there a place for serious conversation? Of course.. there’s always is a place. However, most of us need some levity. A laugh a day, a smile, a chuckle, a grin.... helps us make it through another day. IMHO.

Actually I put it under:
A) Crappy schools which push out barely literate graduates (the amount of remedial education required around here is atrocious)
B) Teen moms who don’t have the wisdom to think of consequences (of course the first one which comes to mind is being a teen single mom in the first place, compared to which the minor issue of giving your kid a messed up name is fairly trivial).
To that, I say this:
If I were to add another member to my family he would be named Sig Colt Remington. If it was a girl, Beretta Glock.
I understand that sexual immorality is a classic subject for one form of humor. I can laugh at some of that myself. There is a time and a place.
But, bottom line, sexual immorality is no laughing matter. It undermines the foundation and maintenance of the family.
FR touts itself as pro-family.
Proved my point! I saw that picture and busted out laughing. Feel better this morning already. Thanks, Laz.. you never disappoint. Hugs, Mom
Me too, you can even pick first...I’ll take the other.
And the people voted for it and support it. Iceland has the oldest continuously functioning democracy on the planet.
Definition of the word JOKE: something said or done to provoke laughter especially a brief oral narrative with a climactic, humorous twist. Something NOT to be taken seriously: a trifling matter.
Hu-LOOOOOOO.... how do you think families are cre-ATE-eeddddd......
