Former Newsweek editor Evan Thomas made a bizarre statement on PBS's Inside Washington Friday.
"Unexplored story of the year: white men dropping out - dropping out of the workforce, dropping out of elections, just plain dropping out, getting social security, not doing anything, going hunting, fishing, just not in the game" (video follows with transcript and commentary, file photo):

A country boy can survive.
Why work? If you work, then you have to pay taxes against your will for programs you don’t support initiated by people for whom you didn’t vote. Since the society has decided to vote itself bread and circuses, why not just opt out and refuse to pay for the circuses by not earning taxable income?? Life is too dear to waste it working to pay for other people to enjoy a life of leisure.
When is the last time you heard a candidate of either major party talk about courting the white male vote?
They might as well assign us to wear "Kick Me" signs whenever we go out in public.
When affirmative action requirements mean that white males are the least likely hire and the safest to fire, what sort of end result did this boob envision? Add to that decades of university bias in admissions. He’s not so much surprised as looking for a way to make this yet another negative perception against white males. Watch the blame game spin with the inevitable next pronounced drop in economic indicators. It won’t be insanely raising taxes in the middle of a near-depression that did it, nooo, it’ll be greedy white males not contributing somehow, out playing hooky and sitting on their assets. Ayn Rand looks more and more prophetic with every passing day of this bizarre administration.

I know quite a few white men, for whom the latter is closer to the truth. Kind of hard to be part of a system that no longer has any place for you.
Me too. Although I don’t think I’ll be fishing. Reflecting for awhile until the next move. Looking forward to continued learning and the post fulltime, all the time rat race. Oh yeah, doing my share of the Galt thing, too.

It is one thing to drop out on your own and quite another to get kicked out of the workforce and virtually impossible to find another job. This economy is coughing up 45-60 year old men of all ethnicities.
Do you suppose they could be reading Ayn Rand and "going Galt, too?"
Nah. There must be another explanation for that one.

Not to denigrate (ooooh that has nigr in it. Is that politically incorrect???) white women's contribution but they have baby time off and many don't work and other reasons not to be in the work force.
White men got no choice in the matter.
