It comes from Britain most notably. It is a very old ceremonial gesture in which the master of the hunt or huntsman would smear the blood of the fox or other kill onto the cheeks or forehead of a newly initiated hunt follower, often a young child.

It has its roots in other cultures including native American tribes.
