To: Alas Babylon!

I just finished reading Alas Babylon! while remembering what my world was like in 1959. MAD was a distinct daily threat, and the fear of nuclear strike from the USSR was very real!
But at the same time people worked. There was no Great Society to cater to the lazy. Our country’s future is definitely as or more precarious today than it was fifty years ago.

PS: Hoover and Depression will always be connected in the majority of people’s minds. Roosevelt, and now Obama, will never be blamed for doing things that extended a financial crash.
Bush will ALWAYS be blamed. Truth is what the media says it is.

The victors write the history and nowadays it’s a “same day” process.

Alas Babylon! is one of my favs. The paperbacks kept falling apart because I had read them so often. I finally sprung for a hardback :)

IMHO, the US in 1959 was much better off than today. None of this progressive crap. People were generally more decent and moral.

If I could go back in time, the period 1957-1964 would be my choice. I would gladly give up all the technology and perks I enjoy today to live in that much simpler, more honest time.
