Why does America have so many guns?
The Washington Post ^ | 19 December 2012 | Harold Meyerson

Posted on 12/19/2012 7:34:08 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

Compare the rate of murder by gun in the United States to the rate in any other advanced industrial nation, and you’re forced to draw one of two conclusions: Either there are far more homicidal people in this country than just about anyplace else on Earth, or far more guns. We must either be home to more people who succumb to murderous rage or who kill out of the coldest of calculations, or it’s easier to pick up a gun and start shooting here than in any comparable country.

And yet, I’ve never heard even the staunchest gun advocate make the case that Americans are inherently more homicidal than everyone else. They repeat ad nauseum that people, not guns, kill people; but they don’t argue that there’s something about Americans that make them kill more than their counterparts in other nations.

Meanwhile, look at the numbers. In the United States, there are 3.2 gun homicides per 100,000 residents every year. Switzerland has the next highest rate of any advanced Western democracy, at 0.7 per 100,000. After Switzerland, the rate drops to 0.5 in Ireland and Canada; 0.4 in Sweden and Finland; 0.2 in New Zealand, Spain and Germany; 0.1 in France, Britain and Australia; and a flat 0 in Japan.

Want to argue that we have 32 times the rate of dangerous mental illness that they have in Australia? That Americans are characterologically 16 times more murderous than Spaniards or Germans? I thought not.

But in America, people who snap are a hell of a lot more likely to have a gun close by. The rate of gun ownership in the United States is 89 per every 100 people. No other advanced society has a rate even close to that.

So its not really every blade of grass but it is most blades of grass.

That, as my late daddy used to tell us when walking
in the woods, “Watch where you step!”.

Because the economy is bad, and we can't afford to buy more.

How true. I have a list as long as your arm of other weapons I'd like to buy as soon as the financial picture improves. And I'm just a lady. I just figure that my daughter and I have the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and we can't enjoy those rights if we have to live in fear of being raped and/or murdered and/or robbed.

My little town had a murder almost 30 years ago. There was a shooting about 5 years ago but that was between people who aren’t locals.
I do have one of the Hutaree militia members about a half mile away but he’s no threat.

Harold, you useful idiot, it is because of people like you and your filthy rag that gun ownership is so high in the United States. You don’t really have a clue, do you?

1. Thugs need them so they can continue their illicit and deadly activity instead of getting a real job.

2. The honest citizens need them because the Founding Fathers knew that someday we would have a president who had disdain for the Constitution, would pee on it, and would make laws as he wished.

And what is more dangerous than citizens with guns? Leftist governments who ban guns. In the last 100 years Leftist governments have killed about 150 million of their own citizens. More than all wars during the same timeframe. Some report the dead by leftist governments as 250 million. Zer0’s buddy Bill Ayres discussed his communist plans with the Chinese leftists and they told him he would need to kill about 25 million US citizens who would not accept communism. It is even in his own book “Prairie Fire” as well as in reports from a FBI undercover agent. I thinlk Zero0 is not new, he is just like previous leftists in that he wants gun control so no one can fight back.

Why not?

I'd like to know why we've got so many damned, braindead liberals. Okay, I know, recreational drugs, but that can't account for all of them.

Because we are crazy, because ET has some nasty enemies as well, because planet Earth is populated by humanoids who exist to survive. And guns are very good survival tools.

Even against possible alien invaders.

The never ending gun gab attempt is largely driven by global interests. Everybody wants what America has but we bristle with guns.

Note that the article very carefully compares ONLY "gun homicides", instead of total homicides. Evidently the WP thinks being murdered with a gun makes the victim deader than murder with some other implement of violence.

I pray that you get a good Christmas and New Year. And maybe something in the stocking.

I recently bought ammo for the nanny that watches my grandbabies. Daughter joins her and pays for range time.

My daughter, the grandbabies, and the nanny deserve to live and thrive. All I can do is push a little practice ammo that way to encourage that. Besides what I did, instilling those values when daughter was a bratling herself.

She found out at Thanksgiving that the first rifle she shot was an AR-7. She never knew what it was, before. It was a bonding moment. I still have it. She'll inherit it.

Break down the rates of murder and violence by ethnicity and national origin and one finds a non-PC pattern. The American descendants of Europeans have rates like that of Europe, with Americans descended from other continents having rates of violence similar to those of where their ancestors came from. Meanwhile, US states with strong civil commitment laws experience about a third less the rate of personal violence and murder than states with weak civil commitment laws. And states with permissive concealed carry laws have lower rates of violent crime and far fewer spree killings.
