They weren’t actually banned. The congress purposely didn’t do an outright ban because they thought the Supreme Court would declare the law unconstitutional.
They are restricted, have to be registered and a tax paid. There are actually quite a few around and almost none have been involved in crime.

Fact Check - Automatics Weapons are not banned.
LA Times - October 16, 2012
http://articles.latimes.com/2012/oct/16/news/la-pn-romney-illegal-automatic-weapons-20121016
+++ The National Firearms Act of 1934, the Gun Control Act of 1968 and the Hughes Amendment in 1986 have all placed limits on how automatic guns can be bought and sold,
but did not make it illegal to possess them entirely.
Purchasing one requires submitting fingerprints and photographs to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, going through an FBI criminal background check, and paying a $200 tax, among other requirements. Only automatic weapons manufactured and registered with the federal government before 1986 can be bought, owned and sold. +++

Or Mr. Murdoch, no amount of gun control laws would have stopped a demon possed gun shooter who was intent on slaugthering little children and their teachers.
